What are Dental Implant Restorations?

A dental implant is used to restore the normal appearance and function of a tooth that is missing or severely damaged. An implant is often made out of the same materials as a crown and designed to look as identical as possible to the natural tooth. Unlike a crown that goes around the top of the tooth, a dental implant replaces the tooth at the root, attaching to the bone and fusing with the jaw for lasting stability and proper function. A dental implant restoration can provide the base for a single synthetic tooth, a dental bridge, or permanent dentures.

Can I Benefit from Dental Implant Restoration?

Dental implant restorations can be used to improve:

  • Appearance – A dental implant is made to blend in with the natural teeth. They can be used to replace a tooth that has an irregular shape, size, or color.
  • Function – Dental implants can replace a missing or broken tooth and provide the structure needed to assist in biting and chewing. Dental implants are designed to act like the natural tooth.
  • Durability – A dental implant is fused with the jawbone in order to maximize strength and durability.

You can benefit from a dental implant if you have the proper bone density for the implant to take hold and are committed to maintaining good oral hygiene after placement.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before you receive a dental implant restoration, your dentist will examine your mouth and teeth, take pictures and x-rays, and discuss your concerns and goals for treatment. Next, a mold will be created of the tooth or teeth you will be having replaced to create an exact fit for the implant. Your surgical placement of the dental implant will take place under local anesthesia. The implant site will then be prepared, and the implant will be placed.

After treatment with a dental implant restoration, there might be some discomfort for a day or two. It can take about two to six months for the implant to fuse or integrate with the bone. Once the implant has successfully fused, a crown will be made and placed over the top of the implant to form a natural-looking and functioning tooth.
